ECMWF – A brief introduction

ECMWF is a strong embodiment of
scientific collaboration. Our staff are experts from across Europe and we also
benefit from the talent of visiting scientists and fellows from around the
globe. Atmospheric science is a calling. Understanding the Earth’s system and how it drives the weather is fascinating and
hugely complex. Weather is both a force for good and a weapon of mass destruction, so
the skill or quality of weather prediction matches the society as a
whole and to individuals. Our Member and Co-operating States are the brain of
ECMWF and our staff is its heart. There is an extremely strong relationship
between the Member States and the Centre. They are more than just the funders, they
are also experts in our field so discussions and decisions are never just
about money, they are about how best to advance science so citizens and society
are best equipped to deal with impacts of severe weather. There is not much
nature that is stronger and more violent than freak waves, hurricanes, or heat
waves. We cannot control the weather but we can plan for it.
