Hello and welcome to Digital Minute. This week we’re looking at a new mobile search update that has big implications. Google has quietly introduced an update for travel results on mobile, which has almost pushed out all, non-Google content off the first page. A travel search, such as “what to go in Italy”, now returns almost entirely Google-owned content on the first page, such as photos, hotel reviews, flight comparisons, maps, city guides and weather data. By displaying so much of its own content one page one, Google is restricting the amount of traffic that other sites can attract from other types of keywords. The update is reflective of an ongoing trend for Google to facilitate the answers that searchers are looking for, by promoting its own content and services ahead of third party platforms.
