GRAND SEIKO SBGH201 Automatic High-Beat 36.000 | Chrono24 Zoom

Hey guys! This is Balasz and welcome to
another zoom episode. Today I’d like to talk about the Grand Seiko High-Beat SBGH201. It’s a beautiful and very significant timepiece in Grand Seiko, as
it’s basically a reincarnation of the legendary 1960s Grand Seiko High-Beat. If
you want to learn more about the watches in general make sure to subscribe to our

such as our in-depth watch talks and reviews as well as event recaps and
how-to videos. But now let’s talk about the Grand Seiko High-Beat SBGH201. This watch comes from Grand Seikos Heritage Collection and it is very similar to the
SBGH001J, which was a Grand Seiko from the Seiko Line. As you know Grand Seiko used to be a sub-model line for Seiko.
Few years ago however the Japanese brand moved it out of Seikos shade or shadow
if you will and it became a full-fledged brand. Back then this watch was the SBGH001J, as a Seiko Grand Seiko. Right now it’s the SBGH201 Grand Seiko. We
have a stainless steel case here which is 40.2 millimeters in
diameter and 13 millimeters thick, as you can see it’s not a thick watch per se. It
has a beautiful design which is reminiscent of the vintage Grand Seiko
models of the 60s with polished and brushed surfaces on the logs, on the side
of the case, as well as on the top of the case. The watch has a screw down crown.
When you screw it off in the first position, you can set the date and in the
second position obviously you can set the time. When you pull out the crown to
the second position, the second hand stops, as it has a hacking mechanism in
the movement. The watch is water resistant to 100
meters or 10 bars. It has a magnetic protection and it’s 151 grams in weight.
Inside the watch you have Seikos Calibre 9S85. The 9s caliber line
is basically not the revival of the 10 beat movement of the past but a brand
new version of this high precision caliber. Just a quick summary of the 10
beat movement, it came to the market in 1968 as Japan’s first automatic 10 beat
watch or well movement equipped with these watches by Grand Seiko. It was
developed and produced by Grand Seiko. 10 beat means that the caliber is a high
beat, so in one second the movement beats ten times. The caliber in the 1968 watch
it was the 61GS. The 10 ticks per second caliber. Then you had the 45GS which
was the manual version and the 19GS which was made into ladies watches. This
movement is a high beat automatic with manual winding capacity, so you can screw
down the crown and without pulling it into the first position to set the date,
you can manually wind the automatic movement. It has 55 hours of power
reserve, 37 joules, a date feature in the date window at the 3 o’clock and as I
said, hacking mechanism. This Grand Seiko has a beautiful white dial with a
contrasting blue seconds hand, you can see that in certain angle the hand looks
dark blue and another angle it looks light blue. You have applied indexes all
around the dial the Grand Seiko GS logo at 12 is also applied and then you have a
date window at the 3 o’clock position. The crystal is curved sapphire crystal
with anti-reflective coating on the inner side. We have a steel bracelet with
three main links and two small additional side links or decoration.
The main links are brushed and too little decoration lines are polished. If
we flip that watch over, we see that it comes in a Grand Seiko buckle with push
buttons to release and to close. The price of this Grand Seiko
on Chrono24 is between 4.500-5.500 Euros and as you can see it has gone up in value quite a bit, especially
since September of 2019 until this month. So the Grand Seiko High-Beat SBGH201
really is a sophisticated timepiece with an elegant design and high-end modern
technology. It is also strongly connected to Grand Seikos history as it resembles
the legendary 1960s high beat watches. But what do you guys think about the SBGH201 and what do you think about Grand Seiko in general? Let us know in the
