In The Cave #19: 3 Smart SEO Tips To Improve Your Search Rankings


Jordan: Welcome to another episode of In the
Cave. I’m Jordan Scheltgen. Justin: I’m Justin Kerby. That timed out really well. Jordan: Yeah, it did. Today we’re going to be talking about drinking
beers and marketing and laughing. Justin: Normal stuff. Beer and marketing, yeah. Jordan: Lots of normal stuff. Justin: Today we’re talking about SEO tips
specific to writing articles. So, for writing articles, SEO tips. I just said that– Jordan: But hold up, we gotta get the beer
first. Justin: Okay. Jordan: Come on. You know the drill. Justin: Numero uno, most important. What is it? Jordan: We are drinking the Postcard Pils
American Pilsner by Green Bench Brewing Co. Justin: That’s a really cool label. Jordan: Yeah, out of St. Petersburg, Florida. Justin: Not bad. Jordan: Little bit of beer on the table. Justin: Yeah, all over the table. It’s pretty good. I don’t mind this. Jordan: Oh, I like that. That might be my favorite one we’ve ever had. Justin: I think I’m going to finish that one. Jordan: Yeah. Justin: How does it relate to SEO? Segue. Jordan: Well, let me tell you. It doesn’t, really. Let’s talk about SEO, though, and I want to
talk today about some quick tips that you can do to help your blog post rank higher
in search. The first thing that we see, and it’s such
an easy fix, is to ad alt tags to images. So, whenever you go to add an image to a blog
post, if you’re doing it within WordPress, it’ll say “alternative text,” you just go
and actually write what that image is. So, if you’re writing, let’s say it’s a blog
on top ten car dealerships, or top ten cars, and you have a picture of a Ferrari, you’re
not going to put your dealership’s name as the alternative text, you’re going to put
what it actually is, so red Ferrari. That’s going to help add more context for
search to what your article and what that blog post is about, so they’re going to go,
“Oh, it’s about cars.” There’s also rich media in the form of photos. Videos actually have tags in them where you
can go, “Oh, this blog post– these words must be about something to do with that.” Justin: Right. So, if you’ve ever wondered how Google image
search works, so if you’ve ever Googled “Justin Kerby” for example, and you see a bunch of
photos of me, my photo’s not in there, because Google is smart enough to know who I am; I’m
not that famous. I put alt tags in my photos that say, “Justin
Kerby,” so when people search, immediately those images pop up along with a bunch of
dudes who’ve been arrested for other reasons. I’m trying to get them down on the page. There’s a lot of Justin Kerbys that have done
some bad stuff. But I’m near the top now, so we’re winning. That’s how alt tags work. Let’s move on to titles. Jordan: Yes, let’s talk about titles. Justin: Off of arrest records. Jordan: So, one of the things you can do with
titles that is so easy and it’s at your fingertips, look, when we make our headlines and make
our titles, we’re taking our best guess at what we think’s going to be successful on
social media, when we send out to our email subscribers, whatever it may be, but there’s
something interesting you can do. You can actually go into your Webmaster tools;
see how people are finding those blog posts, and what they’re typing in to search. So, if someone is– or say we write something,
the cheapest places to live in Alberta, and our title might’ve been, “Here Are the Five
Most Inexpensive Places to Live in Alberta That You Never Thought,” but when we go into
Google webmaster tools and it says cheapest places people are searching for – “cheapest
places to live in Alberta -” now what we can do is actually go back and change our title. Let’s give people what they’re searching for,
so let’s change it to… Justin: That’s the exact point he’s making
is that you have to name your articles what people are going to be searching for to find
those articles. Sometimes you hit it on the head right out
of the gate, but what often happens is we’ll write articles, we’ll look at them a couple
months later and see that people are searching for different things than the title of the
article. You want to raise your ranking in search engines,
you just gotta– this is one of the main things you gotta do: change the title to what people
are searching for, and that includes changing the title tags and adding into the description
of the article some of the things that people are searching for, too. Jordan: Yep, you want to make sure– well,
in the meta description. The meta description is one of the things
that will help your click-through in actual search engine results, so don’t– it’s just
one of those things where don’t be lazy. Fill it out. Justin: And it’s always worth investing an
hour worth of your time into looking into what you can do with Google webmaster tools. It’s just a really powerful thing that you
can do to boost your SEO, so educate yourself on webmaster tools. Maybe we’ll do a show later on how to best
use webmaster tools, but it’s really worth your time. Even like a half hour spent on learning about
webmaster tools can up your traffic a ton. Jordan: Huge. Things like submitting a site map, we’ll get
into that in another episode, I think. And as a final tip, just to get some SEO power
juice, as they say, to your blogs, if you ever mention another business or if you source
someone in an article, link to them, number one. Link to them with the proper text, and then
also email them after, saying, “Hey, you were included in our post.” Hopefully you’re talking about them in a positive
light. But if you email a business that you’ve mentioned,
let’s say, in your post, a lot of times, businesses have a press section on their website, and
they’ll add your post in into the press section. That’s a back link for you, that helps your
blog post specifically, and your website overall rank higher in search. Justin: Right. So, like we’ve said a lot of times during
“In the Cave” episodes, when you’re finished writing an article, say you’ve mentioned other
people in the article, that’s not the time to stop. You’ve got to keep going. Contact the people that you mention within
articles, because you want them to link back to you, and it’s just such a small step that
people always seem to drop the ball on. They don’t continue all the way down the funnel
and follow up with people. Just shoot out an email. There’s tons of quick templates you can find
to get people’s attention when you type stuff out. We often send Facebook messages, too. I mean, there’s lots of different ways you
can contact people, make sure they see it, and then you’re really likely to get a link
