Does Google still need text to understand my site?

Today’s question comes from the UK. Danielroofer asks, I have removed a lot of text from my site and replaced it with images. My bounce rate has dropped considerably. Conversions and time on the site are up. Will Google have an issue with the lack of textual content on the site? Does Google still need text? Wow, really great question. Google does still want text, so there’s a couple options. One is if you have an image that you’ve made of some text that’s really beautiful, you can include some textual content there. You can sort of say, Alt, or the title, that sort of thing. So you can say,…

Should I use pushState to update my URLs instead of #! to manage Ajax navigation?

Today’s question comes from Paul Irish. Paul asks, “Should I use pushState to update my URLs instead of using the hashbang style to manage Ajax navigation?” Well, Google is able to handle both, so both can be OK. But one thing that hasn’t come out as much is that pushState is pretty good as far as– I think one crawl person put it– that if a correctly implemented site that uses pushState typically doesn’t need any extra support enabled for us to be able to crawl it. So we do support both, and we do handle both standards. But if you are thinking about using pushState, it’s something that I…

Sources of Data – Web Scraping Example 2

So, we can see the data coming through for the page. We can see all this extraneous data that…

Can I just disallow crawling of my JavaScript files to fix that?” Well, you can disallow all JavaScript. But I really, really, really would not recommend that. If there’s perhaps one individual JavaScript file that’s the source of the problem, you could disallow that. But in general, it can be really helpful for Google to be able to fetch, and process, and execute that JavaScript to learn what other links are on the page. So in general, I would not block…
