Improving website performance with Page Speed

Kerner: Hi, my name is Sam Kerner, and I’m a software engineer at Google working on making Google faster. Page Speed is a tool that gives you concrete suggestions for how to make your web site faster. We look for things like, did you compress your images, did you set proper caching headers, did you write efficient JavaScript, and so on. In order to show you what Page Speed can do, I have created a very simple website, and I am going to apply Page Speed to it and show you the suggestions. There are three images on this page, some JavaScript to create the effect of pointing at an…

Will my site’s ranking be hurt if I use HTTPS instead of HTTP?

Today we have a question from Gary Tamas in Zurich. Gary wants to know, by design, HTTPS is slower than HTTP. Considering Google’s focus on speed, does that mean my site will be penalized if I switch to HTTPS? No, I wouldn’t worry about that. In fact, it can be a very good idea to switch your site to HTTPS. HTTPS, or SSL, is a secure version of HTTP that encrypts things between your browser and the web server. So that keeps your boss, or your ISP, or your government from snooping on whatever is happening on that connection, unless they can do some crazy Mission Impossible, man-in-the-middle attack. And…

Also, in a direct or indirect way it is seriously taken into account by the Google algorithm. Now, loading speed depends on a myriad of technological factors, but I would still like to give you the set of methods which I generally apply. First of all, what is a good loading speed? Google loves the TTFB (Time To First Byte), which corresponds to the time required to get the first byte since the user’s browser makes a request to the server. Best practices set this optimal value to a…

Should I disallow Googlebot from crawling slower pages?

Today, we have a question from London. Tommo wants to know, you mentioned that site speed is a factor in ranking. On some pages, our site uses complex queries to return the user’s request, giving a slow page time. Should we not allow Googlebot to index these pages to improve our overall site speed? Really interesting question. I would say, in general, I would let Googlebot crawl the same pages that users see. The rule of thumb is this. Only something like 1 out of 100 searches are affected by our page speed mechanism that says, things that are too slow rank lower. And if it’s 1 out of a…
